HTC, Samsung & More Invest $25M in Wevr, Transport Content Portal Announced

There are plenty of companies working in virtual reality (VR) technology now, but few seem to be as busy as Wevr. This group is one part developer with projects like theBlu: Encounter, one part VR filmmaker having worked on Samsung and Skybound Entertainment’s GONE series, and one part incubator, having helped to bring titles such as the upcoming Irrational Exuberance to life. Soon the company will also become a content provider, as it has recently announced a new VR movie portal, Wevr Transport, along with a huge round of investments.

Wevr Transport

The company has raised some $25 million USD with the help of investors such as HTC, Samsung Ventures, Evolution Media Partners, Madison Wells Media (Gigi Pritzker/Clint Kisker), Orange Digital Ventures, Digital Garage (Joi Ito), AME Cloud Ventures (Jerry Yang), Boldstart Ventures, Scott McNealy and Ross Levinsohn. HTC and Samsung are obviously notable in particular for having their own head-mounted displays (HMDs) in the Gear VR mobile-based and HTC Vive PC-based devices respectively.

As for Wevr Transport, this is designed as an independent VR platform that will allow VR filmmakers to publish content and then share it with others. Crucially, the platform will be coming to a wide range of HMDs such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Gear VR and Google Cardboard. As such, the platform will be launching through Oculus VR’s own store as well as the likes of app stores for smartphones. The concept is currently undergoing a private beta, though there’s no word yet on when it might launch for the masses.
