Epic Games Reveal Unreal Engine 4 VR Editor
Epic Games, creator of the highly acclaimed Unreal Engine videogame development suite, has today revealed a brand new asset: VR Editor. Allowing virtual reality (VR) content to be created in-engine while using a VR head-mounted display (HMD), VR Editor offers real-time object manipulation.
VR Editor is not a standalone product, but instead an addition to the existing suite. Using the Unreal Editor in VR mode developers can create content in VR, opposed to requiring specialised tools. VR Editor will become a part of the same Unreal Editor that is currently used by both independent developers and AAA studios alike.
Revealed during an Epic Games livestream via the company’s official Twitch account, a live preview was offered showcasing development assets using the HTC Vive. It has also been confirmed that Unreal Engine 4’s VR Editor will be compatible with the Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch. Though no information is currently available regarding PlayStation VR and PlayStation Move compatibility, Unreal Engine 4 is famed for the ease of multi-platform porting.
Details regarding Epic Games’ launch plans for VR Editor will be revealed during this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC), San Francisco, 16th March 2016. VRFocus will of course be present during the announcement, reporting back with all the latest information.
