The UK virtual reality (VR) industry is growing by the day, with a wide range of events taking place in which enthusiasts, developers and more gather to talk about the tech. In terms of consumer-focused shows, though, there are only a handful of opportunities to come and check out a head-mounted display (HMD) throughout the year. One of the best shows to do this at last year was at the 2016 EGX event in Birmingham. The event is returning from 22nd – 25th September this year, and will aim to be the ‘premier’ showcase for VR in the UK.
Tickets for EGX 2016 have launched today. A newsletter sent out via email makes note of the organiser’s intention to be the best place to sample both upcoming and already released VR tech in the UK. “Virtual Reality was one of the stories of EGX 2015, with PlayStation VR and HTC Vive both making their UK public debuts, and Oculus Rift headsets also available to sample,” it reads. “2016 is set to be a pivotal year for virtual reality and EGX will once again be the premier event for showcasing this cutting-edge technology in the UK.”
A four day super pass to the event costs £65 GBP, while a range of options for the remaining days ranging from £12 – £25 are also available.
By the time EGX 2016 takes place, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will be available to consumers. The former will be shipping for early pre-orderers on 28th March 2016 while the latter will be going on sale in April 2016. It’s also hoped that the PlayStation VR kit for PlayStation 4 will also meet its target window of a launch in H1 2016, though creator Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) is yet to announce a specific launch date, nor comment on a possible price for the device.
