With the Star Wars franchise back in the spotlight thanks to last year’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, it was only a matter of time before the series started to show up in virtual reality (VR). Outside of some partnerships with Google and its Google Cardboard head-mounted display (HMD), cinematic VR company Jaunt has now released a new 360 degree video on its app for that HMD and Gear VR that parodies the franchise in a piece called ‘Wookie on Vacation’.
Directed by YouTube creator Sam Macaroni (who himself was featured in Epic Games’ recent VR documentary series), Wookie on Vacation is a short experience that can be viewed through the official Jaunt app. The premise sees Han Solo give his iconic sidekick, Chewbacca, some time off for holiday, leaving Han with C3-PO and Princess Leia, the latter of which is sporting a costume that will be instantly recognisable to fans of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. It’s not long before the inexperienced crew land their ship, the Millennium Falcon, in a spot of trouble.
It’s a short piece, lasting just over a minute in length, though it’s one of the first examples of Jaunt using its app for other types of 360 degree experiences. It also largely takes place within the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, which will no doubt be a thrill for Star Wars fans to step inside.
