The First Generation Oculus Rift Will Last ‘between a console and phone’ Cycle

The first consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) may be going up for pre-order today, but what about the next edition? Oculus VR has made it clear that there are plenty of updates and improvements to be made for future versions of the Oculus Rift as it continues the long road towards the perfect HMD. As for when the company will reveal its next steps, expect it to come between two traditional tech cycles.

Palmer Luckey, creator of the Oculus Rift, has said that the first generation of the device will last somewhere between a mobile phone’s annual release cycle and a consoles longer, 5 – 7 year cycle. He said as much in a Reddit AMA: “Somewhere between a console and a mobile phone, much closer to a mobile phone. The PC spec for Rift won’t change during the 1st generation.

“Quite a few features,” he continued. “We have a lot going on in Oculus Research, some of which will make it into the next product, some of which will go into products even further down the road. VR is still advancing very rapidly, there will be some pretty huge technological shifts happening.”

Expect to hear something on a possible CV2 in a few years’ time then. VRFocus will continue to follow the Oculus Rift and provide new updates on it.
