Sony Interactive to Place ‘bigger emphasis on PlayStation VR’

Since the birth of the original PlayStation over two decades ago, fans have known the videogame focused side of Sony as Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). This division of the company has seen the PlayStation brand through four home consoles, two portable systems and a wide range of other initiatives and services, guiding a number of company-owned developers too. Today, however, SCE is announcing a merge with another arm of Sony, Sony Network Entertainment (SNE) to become an entirely new division: Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE).

The news was announced over on the PlayStation Blog, where the company’s upcoming virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), PlayStation VR, even received a mention. “The formation of SIE will create an even stronger PlayStation,” said Shawn Layden, the once-President and CEO of SCE America, with a new title yet to be revealed. “That means an even bigger emphasis on developing pioneering platforms like PS4 and PlayStation VR, world-class games from our World Wide Studios development teams, and innovative network services such as PlayStation Vue.”

He later concluded: “Thank you for joining us on this important step in PlayStation history. And as always, we are deeply grateful for your continued support and feedback. We’re excited to undertake this next step in PlayStation history with you!”

PlayStation VR is expected to launch in the first half of 2016, though a final date and pricing are yet to be announced. The device runs with the PlayStation 4 home console.
