On Monday VRFocus reported that India was rumoured to be seeing the launch of Samsung’s mobile virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) the Gear VR this month. Today the smartphone manufacturer held an event to now officially announce the launch of the headset for the Indian market.
Reported by the Hindustan Times, the HMD is now available for Rs.8,200 via Samsung’s retail location across the country, and online through Flipkart. Samsung has been rapidly expanding the availability of the Gear VR, which has seen successful launches in North America and Europe.
The VR platform which was co-developed with Oculus Rift manufacturer Oculus VR, fits all of Samsung’s flagship smartphones; Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge+. The consumer version has made several improvements over the original Innovator Edition for developers with a reduction in weight and a more ergonomic touchpad.
There’s also a sizeable amount of software that’s downloadable for the headset with numerous apps, videogames and 360-degree videos available. New content is released on a weekly basis with popular titles like CCP Games’ Gunjack, Coatsink Software’s Esper 2 and video apps from Vrse and NextVR just some of the experiences worth exploring.
