Palmer Luckey on Why You Won’t See different Colours for Oculus Rift

The Oculus Rift arrives in one colour and one colour only: black. You might think that, over time, Oculus VR would start to release new colours for its virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), similar to how console manufacturers offer different takes on their hardware after their initial launches. Sadly, there’s bad news for those that were holding out for a different shade of Oculus Rift after the initial kit releases, as Oculus VR has this week confirmed that there won’t be any other colours for the device released.

Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey said as much in an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit earlier this week. “You can have the Rift in any color you want, as long as it is black!” Luckey replied when asked if other colours for the anticipated HMD might arrive later down the line.

He then explained: “Manufacturing in different colors would add cost and increase complexity, and many colors (especially white) are difficult to work with. Our device has infrared light coming through the shell all over, though you cannot see that in visible spectrum pictures.”

It doesn’t seem as if the Oculus Rift will be available in any other colours any time soon, then. The black version of the device is available to pre-order now for $599 USD and, while the first to pre-order will be getting their kits on 28th March 2016, the expected shipping date for current orders is now listed for June 2016.
