Oculus Rift’s Wire Length Revealed, Extenders Supported

Unlike Oculus VR’s other virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), the Gear VR, the Oculus Rift is not a wireless device. Instead, it has to be plugged into a high powered PC in order to run demanding VR experiences. It’s less than ideal, but the issue can be lessened somewhat with the inclusion of a long wire that gives users plenty of space to play around with. With pre-orders going live today, Oculus VR has now revealed how long the wire for the Oculus Rift connecting to the PC really is.

When asked about exactly that in a recent Reddit AMA, Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey said: “4 meters from PC to Rift headset, though use of extenders is often possible.” Elsewhere, he also noted that Oculus VR will not be offering its own extender add on, as the alternatives sold through retailers such as Amazon are too cheap to compete with. Wire lengths for competing HMDs such as the HTC Vive and the PlayStation VR are yet to be revealed.

The Oculus Rift is available to pre-order for $599 USD and will start shipping at the end of March 2016. Stay tuned to VRFocus for the latest updates on the kit.
