Oculus Research Office to Open in Pittsburgh

Facebook the parent company of virtual reality (VR) firm Oculus VR, the creators of the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) and Oculus Touch motion-controllers, is opening a new Oculus Research office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It will be focused advancing VR research for the company and Facebook has already listed several openings for new staff.

Confirming to VentureBeat an Oculus spokesman said the company has opened the new office “that’s dedicated to Oculus Research.” The first set of published job openings are aimed towards computer vision specialists – Computer Vision Engineer, Computer Vision Researcher, and a Postdoctoral Research Scientist on Computer Vision, as well as a software engineer.

There’s been no indication by Facebook or Oculus about when the new office will open but the software engineer position requires applicants: “Graduating with a BS by August 2016”, while the computer vision researcher posting states: “Graduating with a PhD by December 2016”.

With 2016 set to be a big year for VR with the first commercial consumer headsets launching, the Oculus Rift in particular has already created a furore with its $599 USD price tag being higher than many expected. As possibly the biggest name in VR its no surprise that Facebook wants to expand Oculus VR and its research division to keep it top of the game, as competition could be tough in these early years.
