Luckey Explains Lack of Oculus Rift Pricing Info

Oculus VR made a huge announcement today, confirming that the long-anticipated pre-order campaign for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) would be going live later this week on 6th January 2016 at 08:00 PST. What wasn’t announced, however, was the full price for the kit. However Palmer Luckey, creator of the Oculus Rift and founder of Oculus VR, has now taken to Reddit to explain exactly why this information wasn’t revealed with today’s news, and also reassuring when the price will be announced.

“This is standard practice in the consumer electronics industry,” Luckey stated in response to fans asking where the price for the kit was. “The price is almost always announced alongside preorders. Phones, game consoles, they all do it this way – it is kind of weird to see people thinking it is some kind of special sign about anything!”

As mentioned here, the price for the Oculus Rift will indeed be revealed when the pre-orders go live later this week. In the past the company has stated that a unit coupled with a PC capable of using it would set customers back around $1,500 USD. Oculus Ready PCs are starting from $950, which should give you some idea of how much the final product will cost.

Until that information is revealed, however, keep an eye on VRFocus for any further updates on the kit.
