HTC Rebukes Reports of Splitting VR Business into Separate Company

Over the weekend reports surfaced online claiming that HTC’s Chairwoman Cher Wang was planning to spin-off its virtual reality (VR) division into a separate company. There were several ideas why the Taiwanese company had considered doing this but now its seems those initial reports have been denied and the door to the matter closed.

Issuing a statement HTC has now clearly said: “Recent media reports in Taiwan, such as by United Evening News, stating that Cher Wang is planning to spin off HTC’s VR operations into an independent entity that will be wholly owned by Wang is incorrect. HTC will continue to develop our VR business to further maximize value for shareholders.”

So it looks like business as usual as the company continues to focus its efforts on the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) and its pending launch. Pre-orders are due to start in February with availability landing in April, until then there’s the SteamVR Developers Showcase which will be highlighting third-party titles for the HMD, including some unannounced experiences.

There will also be Virtual Reality Los Angeles (VRLA) Winter Expo this weekend where attendees will be able to sample the newest development kit the HTC Vive Pre, although demos will need to be booked.

VRFocus will continue to bring you all the latest updates to the HTC Vive and its development as announcements are made.
