Frontier Denies Dropping Elite Oculus Support and SteamVR Deal Once More
Elite: Dangerous, the popular space simulation experience from UK-based studio Frontier Developments, has long been a supporter of the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). Integration with the kit has been included since the title’s Alpha testing stages all the way back in 2014, but hit a snag last year when Oculus VR launched a new version of its Software Development Kit (SDK), 0.7. Issues with the update have since prevented the developer from keeping that support up to date. Of course, there are always rumours that Oculus Rift integration has been outright dropped. Recently, Frontier Developments has denied those claims once more.
Reports that said support had been dropped have quickly circled around sites late last week. An official statement from the developer itself noted that the team was focusing on the already-confirmed SteamVR support right now. That’s already included in the current build of the title, meaning HTC Vive owners will be able to play the title in VR when the kit launches in April 2016. However, stories were soon updated to clarify that Frontier Developments has no deal with SteamVR and is still working on that Oculus Rift support.
“In case people are alarmed by the headline or confused on the details, we thought it best to reiterate what we’ve been saying since the release of the Oculus 0.6 SDK,” Frontier Developments Community Chief Zac Antonaci told Eurogamer. “As quoted in the story, we are actively working with Oculus and will keep the community updated as soon as we are able to do so.
“We are keen to support VR in all its forms and we are proud to be leading the way in VR gaming.”
Oculus VR’s 0.6 Software Development Kit (SDK) was the last to released that would still support titles developed with older versions of the kit. Since then both SDK 0.7 and 0.8 have released, removing support for titles developed with older versions that haven’t been updated.
