Virtual reality (VR) has been used to create lots of interesting experiences, music being one of them. Bands like the Foals and The Donnies The Amys have used the technology to promote their recent singles, and now students at Harvard University have released a VR lyric video to Kanye West’s Blood on the Leaves from his album Yeezus.
Running an experimental lab called Convrgency, the students VR experience shows the lyrics popping up in various patterns using the same font. The backgrounds tend to be plain colours, black, white, red for example as the song builds, then strobe effects kick in as the tempo changes and speeds up. Viewer discretion is advised due to the strobe and flashing effects used in the video.
The 360 degree VR video can be viewed via a compatible browser and controlled with a mouse or the WASD keys, it can also be viewed on a smartphone with the YouTube app for the 360 degree experience. If you own a Google Cardboard or similar head-mounted display (HMD) you can view the video through the YouTube app for a more immersive experience.
This isn’t Convrgency’s first VR project either. The students created an experience called Shakespeare 360: Macbeth, with Macbeth played by Matthew Walker and Lady Macbeth portrayed by Juliana Sass.
VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest experimental projects using VR, as they’re announced.
