PlayStation VR’s Golem Gets New Details Revealing Story, Combat and Controls

One of the most mysterious announcements at this month’s PlayStation Experience fan event was Golem, a new fantasy virtual reality (VR) videogame for the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4. The title from indie developer Highware Games was announced on-stage during a keynote conference, but didn’t really pop up again at the event aside from the release of a new PlayStation Conversation video. Now new details on the experience have arrived, revealing a bit more about its story, combat and controls.

The information arrives in the form of a Game Informer preview from its latest issue, which is centred around VR. According to the article, Golem‘s protagonist is a young girl named Twine, who suffers from paralysis following a severe injury. Twine at first feels trapped inside her condition, but then discovers she has a magical gift; the ability to control gigantic stone Golems. Players will then use these creatures at night to explore an ancient city, upgrading them as they make further progress.

Crucial to Golem is a new control system that utilises PlayStation VR’s head-tracking technology. Instead of relying on a thumbstick, players tilt their heads in order to move the stone beasts. Highwire Games hopes to find a standard for control in VR titles that won’t use the DualShock 4 with this, similar to how the studio’s Jamie Griesemer’s previous team, Bungie, helped standardise first-person shooter (FPS) controls with the ever popular Halo series. The PlayStation Move motion control is also used for sword combat, allowing players to freely swing a blade around.

There’s still a lot to learn about Golem, though, including when the title might finally launch. PlayStation VR itself isn’t expected until the first half of 2016. VRFocus will continue to keep a close eye on the project, reporting back with the latest updates from it.
