Virtual reality (VR) fans will be looking forward to the PlayStation Experience fan event this weekend, where Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) will hopefully share more about its PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4. Before that can happen, though, The Game Awards 2015 will be taking place this Thursday, 3rd December at 21:00 PST. The ceremony has traditionally consisted of a few new trailers and reveals of videogames, and will this year play host to a ‘special announcement’ from Oculus Rift creator, Oculus VR.
The news was shared through a new trailer for the show released this week. It’s not clear exactly what Oculus VR will have to share at the show, although perhaps it may relate to one of the videogames that’s on its way to the Oculus Rift in the near future. The company has previously teased that it hasn’t revealed all of the projects that it’s working on with third-party developers; could another make its debut at this week’s show? Currently Oculus VR is known to be working with the likes of Insomniac Games on Edge of Nowhere and Gunfire Games on Chronos.
As for the Oculus Rift itself, the kit is due to launch in the first quarter of 2016, though a specific date and price have not been confirmed. Oculus VR is expected to launch a pre-order system for the device before the end of the year that will also reveal this information. A position-tracked controller known as Oculus Touch will also be heading to the device shortly after launch in H1 2016. A list of third-party partners working with Oculus VR on the HMD was revealed last year, including companies such as Square Enix and Metro developer 4A Games.
VRFocus will continue to follow Oculus VR closely, reporting back with the latest updates on the company’s progress with the Oculus Rift.
