Graphics company NVIDIA has been a long time supporter of virtual reality (VR), providing updates and more for users to fully maximise their graphic cards for head-mounted displays like Oculus Rift. Today sees the launch of a new driver which adds further support for GameWorks VR 1.1, including VR SLI support for OpenGL applications.
With the new OpenGL extension called “GL_NVX_linked_gpu_multicast” it can be used to greatly improve the speed of headset rendering. It’s also possible to control multiple GPUs that are in an NVIDIA SLI group with a single OpenGL context to reduce overhead and improve frame rates. The update also adds support for Oculus VR’s latest SDK, currently 0.8.
As well as the VR SLI and Oculus SDK support the there’re VR tweaks, bug fixes, and optimizations to ensure players get the best VR gaming experience.
NVIDIA states on its devblog: “Autodesk VRED has successfully integrated NVIDIA’s new multicast extension into its stereo rendering code used for HMDs like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, achieving a 1.7x speedup. The multicast extension also helps Autodesk VRED with rendering for stereo displays or projectors, with nearly a 2x speedup.”
