Luckey: Oculus Game Awards Announcement Will Not Be Pre-Orders Opening

Oculus VR has teased fans this week with the news that it will be making a special announcement at The Game Awards on 3rd December 2015. The company will feature alongside a range of other trailer premieres and reveals for the likes of Far Cry: Primal, Quantum Break and more. As expected, the virtual reality (VR) community is running rampant with speculation about what this reveal could be. One thing we do know won’t be announced, however, is the launch pre-orders for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).

Oculus VR founder and Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey said as much on Twitter following the reveal of the news. “Really cool announcement happening at The Game Awards!” the VR figurehead wrote, adding: “(Not preorders opening).” Despite this, those pre-orders are still expected to arrive this year and are said to bring the reveal of the price for the Oculus Rift along with them. It’s likely that the specific release date beyond the kit’s Q1 2016 launch window is also being saved for the pre-order launch, so don’t expect this to be the news at the show.

That still leaves a wide range of possibilities for what Oculus VR will be showing at The Game Awards. Given that the rest of the show is focused on new trailers and announcements, perhaps the company is preparing to reveal a brand new videogame for the Oculus Rift, made by one of its third-party partners. There’s still a long list of developers and publishers confirmed to be working on the tech that haven’t revealed their projects yet, including the likes of Square Enix, Ready at Dawn, and 4A Games. Could The Game Awards play host to the reveal of one of these projects?

Either way, VRFocus will be covering the show to find out exactly what Oculus VR has in store for fans.
