VRtuality’s EDMx Concert to Feature VR and AR Technology

Taking place this weekend is a concert that aims to combine both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology for a new immersive experience for attendees. VRtuality’s EDMx (Electronic Dance Music eXperiential) will be a live-streamed, immersive, concert experience that transforms a top electronic dance music (EDM) DJ into a digital cyborg. It then adds a game-like storyline that will be viewable in 3D as well as through VR head-mounted displays (HMDs), and the whole event can be seen in 360 degree video via compatible browsers and smartphones.

The EDMx event will combine various technologies including a customised game engine, spherical video capture, ambisonic audio and computational photography with a motion capture system and body suit worn by DJ Steve Castro. Sensors in the suit control music mixing and production, holograms, smoke, lights and the DJs’ 3D avatar based on the DJ’s movements.

“Live concerts can be great, but they don’t take advantage of either virtual or augmented reality technology that can kick up the entertainment value, and they can’t be adequately captured for home viewing or replay with conventional streaming technology that provides only a static view,” said VRtuality Founder and CEO Joseph A. Zaki, a VR expert and visual effects veteran in a statement.

The event will be taking place on Saturday, 28th November, at the 16th anniversary of Avalon Hollywood’s After-Hour Power. Tickets for the event will be $40 USD, and to watch the live stream go to EDMX.live. It will be kicking off at 1 am PST with Castro taking the stage at 2 am.

VR HMDs will be available in the balcony for attendees who want to experience the simulated intergalactic world of Castro’s avatar. DODOcase VR will be providing EDMx-branded VR headsets at the event while also making them available online. Streaming services are provided by VRLIVE, which will also be hosting the EDMx channel and currently creating an EDMx mobile app.

VRFocus will continue to follow all the latest news on VR events, reporting back with any announcements.
