Sólfar Studios already has one virtual reality (VR) videogame in development. Back at E3 2015 in June the studio featured in Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) own press conference, announcing Godling for the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4. Little is currently known about that title but this week the developer is ready to announce another. Sólfar Studios has announced EVEREST VR, which is on its way to VR platforms next year. The first trailer for the title can currently be seen below.
EVEREST VR is developed using Unreal Engine 4 and made in partnership with Nordic visual effects and animation house, RVX. The experience allows players to explore the legendary mountain in VR, starting out at base camp and making your way up to the summit. The developers have recreated the mountain in VR with the help of some 300,000 high definition images of the real Everest. Sólfar Studios will even be collaborating with NVIDIA to integrate its GamesWorks VR toolset into the experience.
“As a creative director in the VFX industry working with phenomenal directors like Baltasar Kormákur and Alfonso Cuarón, I´ve always strived to perfect visual effects that add verisimilitude to the story and increase its emotional impact,” said Dadi Einarsson, founder and Creative Director at RVX. “With EVEREST VR, we now place the participant into a story where they control their pace and interaction with the experience. This will rewrite the rules for future storytellers and I can´t wait to see where this creative intersection of film and games talent in VR takes us.”
It’s not yet confirmed exactly which VR platforms EVEREST VR will be appearing on, although it does appear that it will be ready for the launch of whichever HMDs it does come to. VRFocus will continue to follow the project closely, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
