Facebook Brings 360 Degree Video to Gear VR
Social media giant Facebook announced back in September that the site would support 360 degree immersive videos. That support only extended as far as watching the videos through a browser on via the Android app. Now the company has announced that support will be extended to Samsungs mobile virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) Gear VR and iOS.
The announcement comes as the owner of Oculus VR continues its push into VR and augmented reality (AR) technologies, with the consumer launch of the Gear VR taking place next week, Friday 20th November in the US. An international release is due shortly after.
Alongside the further integration of 360 degree videos, Facebook has also revealed it’s partnering with consumer 360 camera manufacturers to simplify the process for the general public to upload 360 degree videos for their own. Cameras from Ricoh Theta, Giroptic, and IC Real Tech will be able to publish videos to their Facebook pages directly from the app on the camera, reports Mashable.
Facebook will also be launching a dedicated site for people who want to start altering the videos. On offer will be tips, FAQs and other guidelines. VRFocus will continue to report on all of Facebook’s latest VR and AR developments as they’re announced.
