Sony Hints at PlayStation VR’s Lifecycle

Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) popular Head of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida has previously said the release of the PlayStation VR will be similar to launching a new platform. While this comment covers (in a general sense) what can be expected in 2016, in terms of price and software expectations, Yoshida may have also been referencing the head-mounted displays (HMDs) expected life cycle? Dr. Richard Marks, Director of Sony PlayStation Magic Lab hints in an interview that the PlayStation VR’s lifespan may mirror that of the PlayStation 4.

Recently during the Immersed conference, Tom’s Hardware spoke with Marks about the HMD, and asked him how he saw its development cycle: “It’s a similar situation to the entire console. Consoles come out and they’re pretty powerful, and then the game developers figure out how to get more and more out of them as it goes. By the end of the life cycle, that’s when you’re seeing the best games possible.”

“I think the PlayStation VR is very well matched to the PlayStation 4. So it will really kind of follow its life cycle quite well. And I think you’ll see as people get more out of the console the VR experiences will similarly get better,” reports Gamasutra.

While the PlayStation VR looks like it’ll stay unchanged, years after launch the same might not happen with the PC-based HMDs like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Oculus VR’s CEO Brendan Iribe has already mentioned work has begun on new prototype versions of Oculus Rift.
