Hulu VR App Invites You to Watch TV on Jerry Seinfeld’s Couch

One of the major announcement’s to come from Oculus VR’s annual developer conference, Oculus Connect, Hollywood, last month was that an agreement had been made with Netflix and the subsequent launch of a Gear VR app for the service. However, it isn’t only Netflix that have seen the advantages that virtual reality (VR) can offer passive viewing, with Hulu also ‘ready to go’.

Hulu originally revealed their VR app last month, following the Netfilx announcement, but have since revealed new details. While the functionality of the app will arguably be largely similar to Netflix’s offering, Hulu will recreate well known fictional environments in which the viewer can enjoy the streaming service. The singular example given thus far is watching an episode of US sitcom Seinfeld while sitting in the titular star’s apartment.

“We think this is a smart bet that helps position us as an innovator and helps us learn earlier on what could be a substantive storytelling environment,” stated Hulu’s head of distribution, Tim Connolly, in an interview with CNET.

Indeed, a VR visit to Jerry’s apartment has already been made available in VR, however with large corporations now jumping on the idea it surely won’t be long until there’s a barrage of high quality recreations of fictional environments from film and television for VR fans to visit. Hulu’s VR app is expected to launch first on Gear VR alongside the consumer version of the device itself, and VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details.
