Next month will see Samsung and Oculus VR finally launch the consumer version of the Gear VR mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). After a year of Innovator Editions the pair will start their first real push to get VR into homes with the device. Those that can’t wait another month might want to take a look at a new deal from Best Buy, however, which has put the S6 version of the Gear VR Innovator Edition, which first released in March 2015, on sale for the exact same price that the consumer version will be launching at.
Fans can currently head to Best Buy’s online store to pick up the device for just $99.99 USD. That’s a whole $100 off of the kit’s original price, and it’s being shipped for free. This version of the Gear VR is slightly smaller and lighter than the original version that supported the Galaxy Note 4 and launched back in December 2014. It also features support for the Galaxy S6’s spin-off phone, the S6 edge, which has a curved screen. Take note, however, that these are strictly the only phones this version of the device can support.
That said, the consumer Gear VR doesn’t greatly improve on the design of its predecessor. It’s lighter still and features a redesigned touchpad but, aside from this doesn’t boast any major updates other than working with all of the phones released by Samsung in 2015. Oculus VR is planning to launch lots of new content for the kit but all of this software should work on the Innovator Edition of the device too. With that in mind, this version of the kit is well worth your consideration if you don’t want to wait for the new version.
An exact date for the launch of the consumer Gear VR isn’t known, although it has been confirmed that it will be releasing before Black Friday on 27th November in the US, with other territories to follow. VRFocus will continue to follow the device closely, reporting back with the latest updates on it.
