Perhaps one of the most visually impressive virtual reality (VR) experiences to be revealed this year is The Hobbit: A Thief in the Shadows from New Zealand-based digital effects studio, Weta Digital. The piece was first revealed during the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) back in March and has since been showcased at events such as SIGGRAPH 2015 in August. Recently VRFocus got the chance to sit down with Weta Digital and Epic Games, who partnered with the company on the project, to learn more about it.
Both Weta Digital’s Head of R&D Alasdair Coull and Epic Games CTO Kim Libreri are on hand in this extensive interview to talk about their successful team up. They detail how the collaboration began and how it came to make its debut at GDC 2015 with the help of Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe.
VRFocus will continue to follow both Weta Digital and Epic Games’ work in VR, reporting back with the latest updates on it.
