Back in May 2015 VRFocus reported on the release of SONAR, a new 360 degree virtual reality (VR) film for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). The piece was created at a summer 2014 project by Philipp Maas and Dominik Stockhausen at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany and released for free on both an official website and the Oculus Share software portal. Today, the creators are releasing a new version of SONAR that’s compatible with the Gear VR mobile HMD from Samsung.
This new version of the film is again free and available from the official website. It supports both stereoscopic 3D and runs at 60 frames per second and is on display at the Immersed Europe Conference and Expo in Murcia, Spain this week. SONAR allows viewers to explore an ancient cave system from which a strange signal is coming from. A trailer for the piece, which is computer-generated, can currently be seen below.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all content for Gear VR, reporting back with the latest updates on the device.
