Sony Attending Oculus Connect 2

Oculus VR’s anticipated developer conference, Oculus Connect 2, gets underway today. Virtual reality (VR) developers from across the globe are travelling to Hollywood, California, to learn the latest about the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) and several other projects that the company is working on. Some of these developers and middleware teams will even be hosting their own talks and workshops throughout the event, which runs until 25th September 2015. One company you might not predict you’ll see at the show is Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), but you’d be wrong to do so.

Project Morpheus

Shahid Ahmad, Director of Strategic Content at SCE, is at least one member of the company heading to this year’s event. Ahmad previously mentioned that he has travelled to Los Angeles over on his Twitter account. He was later asked by Coatsink Software CEO Tom Beadsmore if he would be heading to Oculus VR’s event, to which he simply replied ‘yup’. Following the confirmation, Beardsmore even invited Ahmad to sample Coatsink Software’s Esper, which is on its way to the consumer version of the Oculus Rift.

Many PlayStation fans will know Ahmad for his work signing a wide range of indie developers to work on PlayStation platforms, including the likes of Hello Games with No Man’s Sky and Mike Bithell with Thomas Was Alone. It’s not surprising, then, to hear that he’s attending Oculus Connect, where no doubt many studios working on the Oculus Rift HMD will be hoping to have a talk about bringing their projects to SCE’s PlayStation VR HMD. The PlayStation 4-centric device, recently renamed from Project Morpheus, is currently planning to launch in the first half of next year.

Ahmad’s presence at the show does not necessarily mean that SCE and Oculus VR are working together, though the 2 have repeatedly made note of the positive relationship they share over the past year and a half. Oculus VR is however working with Microsoft to allow Xbox One and Windows PC owners to stream console games into a virtual theatre of sorts within the Oculus Rift. Could such a partnership between SCE and Oculus VR also be possible? VRFocus will continue to follow both companies, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
