Yesterday VRFocus reported that Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) would be hosting sign ups to experience its PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) at next week’s EGX in Birmingham, UK. A website for attendees to register at will be opening at 13:00 BST today, but sign ups to see another major HMD at the show are already open. Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC has opened up a new page offering fans a chance to sample its HTC Vive, made in partnership with Valve and its SteamVR system.
EGX goers can head to this website and enter information such as names and, interestingly, their preferred gaming platforms, genres, type of smartphone and even if they plan on picking up the HTC Vive for themselves when it launches. It’s not clear how answering these questions will influence someone’s chances of securing a spot on the day. Entrants must select which days they are at the show from 24th – 27th September 2015 and must be 18 years or older in order to experience the demo.
“An experience will last 15 minutes,” the page explains. “You will need to be at the HTC stand at least 20 minutes before your start time or your session may be reallocated. Sessions are extremely limited so please provide as much time flexibility as possible. If successful, you must confirm your allocated time within 24hrs so please keep an eye on your emails and phone.” The demo will give players a chance to experience SteamVR’s Room Scale tracking, which allows users to walk around an area of up to 15 feet by 15 feet and have those movements replicated in-game.
The HTC Vive is set to launch in a limited fashion in time for holiday 2015 before arriving in full force later next year. VRFocus will continue to follow the kit’s progress, reporting back with any further updates on it.
