Earlier this year VRFocus reported on Merge VR planning on launching a new smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) of the same name. Now listed for pre-order on Game.co.uk, the HMD has a UK price and release date.
The Merge VR HMD is listed on the retailers website for pre-order at £49.99 GBP with an expected release date of 30th October 2015, just in time for the holiday season. Merge VR Goggles like a lot of phone-based HMD’s will be compatible with Android and iOS smartphones, including larger sizes like the iPhone 6+. The HMD is compatible with VR apps and 360-degree video already on Google Play and in Apple’s App Store.
Where the kit truly differs from the competition, however, is with its dedicated motion controller. The controller offers eight buttons and a thumbstick to allow for motion control in mobile VR titles. The company claims to be working with top app developers in order to create content that supports both the device itself and this controller.
With VR content constantly increasing and more comfortable alternatives to Google Cardboard being needed, this Christmas maybe a boon for manufacturers to release cost effective HMD’s onto the consumer market.
VRFocus will continue to follow any further news or updates regarding Merge VR and report back.
UPDATE: Merge VR has been in contact with VRFocus to point out that, by input, the company was not referring to its controller but instead 2 buttons located on the HMD itself. VRFocus apologies for the error.
