For the past few years Unity Technologies has been hosting an annual awards show that recognises the best projects created on the company’s Unity Engine. Virtual reality (VR) technology played a small part in last year’s ceremony, but it’s set to have a much bigger impact at this year’s show when it takes place on Tuesday 22nd September at Unite 2015 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Unity Awards 2015 nominations have just been announced and this year includes a brand new category looking for the best VR experiences.
A total of 6 experiences are recognised at this year’s event. These include 3 for the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) in Owlchemy Labs’ Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives, Cloudhead Games’ The Gallery: Call of the Starseed and Tilt Brush. The Oculus Rift also has 2 representatives in Playful’s Lucky’s Tale and I Expect You to Die by Schell Games. Finally, Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) Project Morpheus gets a shout out in the form of Headmaster, a recently-announced indie videogame from frame.
VR isn’t limited to this one category, however. Every experience is also listed on a Community Choice list while other categories such as Best Vizsim Project also feature experiences such as Suzuki Virtual Simulator. The Unity Engine itself is currently placing a heavy emphasis on VR, with updates to Unity 5 constantly adding support for new HMDs.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all VR projects, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
