Indie developer 846Studios released on Friday 11th September a virtual reality (VR) experience called [08:46], based on the terrible events of the 9/11 attack back in 2001. Possibly seen by some as a controversial subject matter for VR, the experience supports the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).
The 08:46 experience has players control an office worker in the North Tower of the World Trade Center during the 9/11 events, emphasizing the victims’ point of view.
846Studios said on its Oculus Share page: “Based on countless hours of research in order to try to properly recreate the atmosphere and dynamics within the top floors of the towers, [08:46] was designed and developed as a school project during three months by a six members team, working in close collaboration with two actors for mocap and voice acting.”
“Having put our best efforts to craft a compelling and challenging narrative experience, we now release [08:46] on the 14th anniversary of the tragedy that shaped our century.”
The experience will only support Oculus’ software development kit (SDK) prior to 0.6.0 so many who have already updated their systems won’t be able to try the title.
VRFocus will continue to follow all the latest news and announcements on VR and report back.
