The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition for either the Galaxy S6 or Note 4 versions has appeared on Slickdeals.net with an online voucher code to purchase the head-mounted display (HMD) for $99.99 USD rather than its normal price of $199.99 USD.
The Gear VR HMD which has always retailed at the same price of $199.99 USD is now seeing a dramatic 50% discount to its regular retail price. The Slickdeals website lists the code to use on Samsung.com as, VRDPUS. How long this code will remain active is unknown, just as the reasons for the discount offer. As the current Innovator Edition is a developers kit and not for general consumer use, Samsung maybe clearing out stocks ready for the official launch.
No details have yet been given by Samsung or Oculus VR (who helped create the HMD) on an official launched date or price for the new consumer version of the HMD, but it has been slated to appear this year and is widely expected to be announced at the Oculus Connect 2 event which takes place in less than a month. This was due to Chief Technology Officer at Oculus VR, John Carmack, suggesting via Twitter: “If you are considering buying a phone for VR, you might want to hold off until after Oculus Connect for relevant information.”
VRFocus will continue to follow any Gear VR announcements very closely and report back.
