Since April developers have been able to signup to Valves developer kit program for the HTC Vive. Now the signup form has now been closed for anyone wishing to get their hands on the HTC Vive development kit.
On Valve’s SteamVR page the signup form has now gone and a message reads: “New Sign-ups are now closed but we will continue to ship HTC Vive Developer Editions to new developers through summer and fall. Thanks.”
So while any new studios wishing to venture into virtual reality (VR) with the HTC Vive can no longer do so, any developers who have already completed the form should be receiving the kits in the next few months.
HTC informed Road to VR, that around 400 of the development kits have been shipped, with initial batches being small, but newer batches possibly numbering in the “hundreds”.
With the official reveal of the consumer version by HTC slated for October, including specs and the actual release, which so far has just been Fall 2015, HTC and Valve will presumably want to ship out as many kits as possible. It’ll be too late now for studios to work on launch titles but the HMD will need a steady influx of software coming in to keep up its early momentum before the Oculus Rift and Sony Computer Entertainments (SCE) Project Morpheus HMD’s launch in the new year.
VRFocus will continue to follow all the latest news and releases regarding the HTC Vive HMD in the coming months.
