Movie and videogame tie-ins are nothing new, with varying amounts of success. Today Lionsgate and Starbreeze Studios have announced a partnership to bring a virtual reality (VR) first-person shooter based on John Wick to head-mounted displays (HMD).
The partnership will also involve WEVR who are going to create a fully immersive VR experience that will introduce the game, while studio Grab will be spearheading the development. Starbreeze as well as publishing the title will also integrate the John Wick storyline further into its popular Payday game.
Lionsgate President of Interactive Ventures & Games Peter Levin said of the new venture: “We’re thrilled to partner with the best of the best in VR and game development with Starbreeze, WEVR and Grab, who are collaborating with the movie’s producers to ensure an exciting, immersive and authentic virtual experience. John Wick is the perfect cross-platform property to extend into the fast-growing gaming world, and we believe that a cutting edge VR game will deepen fan engagement and accelerate John Wick’s evolution into one of our next big action franchises.”
Soon to be available will be a promotional experience of the game at select events and stops on the current HTC Vive World Tour, which is making its way through the U.S. and Europe. The studios plan to have a teaser game available at the launch of HTC Vive later this year and available via SteamVR. The full game is expected launch around Spring 2016, when the first wave of VR HMD’s should be available.
VRFocus will continue to report on any further updates from Starbreeze Studios on the progress of the videogame.
