With the official Gamescom award winners being revealed later today, the HTC Vive tweeted an early win when Computer Spiele handed the head-mounted display (HMD) its Best Hardware award yesterday.
The HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) HMD has been doing the rounds over the last few weeks due to its HTC Vive World Tour. The tour which started at the San Diego Comic-Con has been touring the US in a specially designed truck tha tis currently in Seattle and will be heading to San Francisco afterwards. While the European leg of the tour doesn’t involve the truck, visitors to Gamescom will still be able to demo the HMD along with the Lighthouse motion-tracking system. The European leg will also include the IFA event in Berlin, Germany during September and then move onto Paris Games Week towards the end of October.
It will be in October when HTC will reveal further new of the consumer version of the Vive before its release at the end of the year. Jeffrey Gattis, Executive Director of Global Marketing at the company has previously confirmed this, saying: “We’re targeting October for an announcement of our consumer version where we’ll unveil what the actual final idea looks like, the final controllers and should have a pretty decent view of what our content line-up will be like at launch.” Adding: “We’ve made the public commitment that we’re gonna have a consumer product in market before the end of this calendar year.”
Fans will find out later today how well the HTC Vive has done at the Gamescom awards when the announcements start at 6.00pm CEST. VRFocus will be there to report on the awards and any further announcements from Gamescom 2015.
