First Image of Gear VR’s Next Compatible Smartphone Reportedly Leaked

In just under 2 weeks’ time South Korean electronics giant Samsung is set to host its next big press event. Samsung Unpacked, as the company’s events are known as, will be taking place a little earlier than its usual September timeslot this year on 13th August. Plenty of announcements are expected for the show, including the reveal of the Galaxy Note 5, the next enlarged smartphone that’s expected to support the unrevealed consumer version of the Gear VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display. Now the first image of the handset has reportedly leaked.

Internet leaker Evan Blass has recent taken to Twitter to post what appear to be official press renders of both the Galaxy Note 5 and another handset that’s also been rumoured for a long time, the Galaxy S6 Edge +. The latter appears to be an enlarged version of the Galaxy S6 Edge handset that was revealed at an earlier press conference this year. It’s not clear if this second smartphone could also support the consumer Gear VR, also the original Galaxy S6 Edge did indeed support the S6 version of the HMD.

With the consumer Gear VR expected to release this year this event could well serve as the venue for the reveal of the new kit. It’s not known what improvements the device will boast of the original versions, which were dubbed as Innovator Editions when they were launched. Co-creator Oculus VR has previously promised that it will be going ‘full consumer’ with this iteration of the device, making a clear push towards the mainstream market and not just the VR enthusiasts and developers that have been targeted with the first versions.

VRFocus will continue to follow the Gear VR closely, reporting back with any possible updates on its progress.
