Over the course of the past year and a half VRFocus has reported on the progress of Avegant’s Glyph, an upcoming head-mounted display (HMD) that acts as a personal media player. It’s been a while since the kit was last heard from, but the company has some significant news today. Avegant has recently completed a Series B round of funding worth $24 million USD that will allow it to launch its HMD on a wide scale as well as pick up work on its own Retinal Imaging technology.
Funding comes from investors both new and old, including the likes of Lian Luo, Intel Capital, NHN Investment and The Bunting Family Fund. As a result, the company expects to ship the very first Glyph units by the end of this year. Pre-orders are currently available from an official website for $599. The HMD uses micromirror display technology to provide a new way of viewing video.
“We are redefining how entertainment will be consumed, delivering richer, more immersive experiences for both existing content and new media,” Avegant CEO Joerg Tewes said of the news. “With the addition of Lian Luo to our strong investor group, we are strategically positioned to deliver breakthrough products across multiple geographies.”
VRFocus will continue to follow the Avegant Glyph, reporting back with the latest updates on the device.
