Virtual reality (VR) tours are starting to become commonplace as the technology develops and finds more people using it as a viable medium to explore the world around them. Ascape VR is one company that is looking to take advantage by releasing the first VR tour of San Francisco.
Entitled You Are Here: San Francisco the app is the first in a series of You Are Here travel entries. You Are Here: San Francisco is a guided tour of one of America’s most iconic cities with Stuart Schuffman, 2015 San Francisco mayoral candidate and the host of IFC’s 2011 travel show Young, Broke, and Beautiful. Recorded using 360 degree VR video and realistic positional sound, proprietarily developed by Ascape VR, You Are Here: San Francisco will immerse the viewer in the city as they explore the hidden gems of San Francisco with Schuffman, such as Balmy Alley and the Musee Mechanique.
The 360 degree VR video experience has been shot in 4K and is compatible with a number of currently available mobile VR head-mounted displays (HMD), including Google Cardboard, Zeiss VR One, Merge VR, and any others that are compatible with Android smartphones. Ascape VR is also planning versions for Gear VR and iOS and will be released in the near future.
Ascape VR was created this year Daniel Moroz with a team of VR developers and filmmakers as a platform for cinematic 360 degree VR content. The team will be taking You Are Here: San Francisco to the Kaleidoscope 2015 VR Film Festival for a nationwide screening.
VRFocus will be following the progress of Ascape VR and its You Are Here series and reporting back.
