White Lotus Interactive, California based developers of the highly anticipated XING: The Land Beyond, have recently confirmed that their intentions to launch their debut project with support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) are coming to fruition. An adventure videogame providing a picture of the afterlife, XING: The Land Beyond basis its gameplay on real-time interaction with logic based puzzles.
Having begun life with a Kickstarter campaign in early 2013, XING: The Land Beyond has garnered much attention for it’s indie roots yet impressive visual design. The project quickly passed it’s funding goal and achieved it’s third tier stretch goal, Oculus Rift compatibility; a promise which White Lotus Interactive are keen to keep.
“VR has had some pretty crazy new developments since last fall. We’ve been putting in countless hours making sure we are on target to fully support VR on the latest hardware at launch,” states John Torkington, Game Developer at White Lotus Interactive, in a recent post on the developer’s official blog. “On the design side, we’ve made some improvements to the way you move in VR, as well as the way you manipulate objects. We’ve embraced the idea of text existing as a physical object in the world, so any time the player needs to read something it is presented in 3D space.”
White Lotus Interactive have been very active in the exhibition scene, taking XING: The Land Beyond to numerous events including the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Game Developers Conference (GDC) and PAX South. VRFocus has been hands-on with the videogame, stating in a preview of XING: The Land Beyond: ” it’s a videogame that has so much potential in it’s own right, but when played in virtual reality (VR) those environments that are bursting with life will become so much more than polygonal drawings.”
The confirmation that XING: The Land Beyond will honour it’s commitment to virtual reality (VR) support comes as a good sign, however there is still no official release date for the videogame beyond ‘sometime in 2015’. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on XING: The Land Beyond and future VR projects from White Lotus Interactive.
