When visitors go to events like Comic-Con not only do they meet their favourite stars and chat about favourite TV shows, but they can also land some free stuff as well. Company’s do this on purpose to help advertise the next franchise which hopefully will be popular. With the recent explosion of virtual reality (VR) technology, the Syfy channel is giving away free Google Cardboard head-mounted displays (HMD) to promote ‘The Expanse’.
The TV network is bringing 13,000 of the DIY Google Cardboard kits to this years San Diego Comic-Con, so that visitors can use the HMD with a new app called Expanse VR, which has been developed to promote a new science fiction thriller called The Expanse. The show will be premiering in December 2015, and is set hundreds of years in the future, where mankind has colonised Mars and the outer asteroid belts.
The VR app allows viewers to wander around ‘The Canterbury’ a massive freighter from the show, which brings ice from Saturn’s moon’s to provide water to the population of Mars. Syfy will also update the app in the run up to the shows launch with more features and inside info.
VRFocus will be reporting on all the VR events taking place at this years Comic-Con.
