Sony: VR’s ‘biggest challenge’ is that ‘most people haven’t tried it’

Earlier in the week VRFocus discussed how virtual reality (VR) technology shares a difficult relationship with press conferences. While traditional videogames can be shown on giant screens, it’s impossible for companies such as Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) to showcase how its Project Morpheus head-mounted display (HMD) works over livestreams and to audiences of thousands. Of course, SCE itself recognises this and stated that the ‘biggest challenge’ for the technology was simply that the majority of its potential audience haven’t tried it yet.

PlayStation Magic Labs Director Richard Marks said as much in a recent interview with Shack News. “I think the biggest challenge for VR is really that most people haven’t tried it yet,” Marks said. “So they don’t know what it’s like and it’s very hard to communicate that, you can’t broadcast it easily. So the only way that you can know what it’s like is to actually try it. And the easiest way for that for that to happen is that when they will be able to buy them they can show their friends and then they can try it.

“So we want to create content for that launch that people will be able to show their friends easily and bring them into the world of VR.”

SCE certainly had some more comfortable Project Morpheus experiences to showcase at E3 this year. While the likes of RIGS: Mechanised Combat League proved that more hardcore titles could work in VR, others such as a piece that used the mini robots first seen in the PlayStation 4’s augmented PlayRoom app could serve as the ideal introduction to the technology. SCE is yet to detail exactly which of these titles will be available for Project Morpheus’ launch, which is set to take place in the first half of 2016.
