Late last year VRFocus reported on the news that Fox Searchlight Pictures had been showcasing a new virtual reality (VR) experience designed to promote the then-upcoming Reese Witherspoon movie, Wild. The short 360 degree video has made the rounds at a number of events over the past few months, but is now available for all to try. Wild – The Experience, as it’s called, is now available for the Gear VR mobile head-mounted display (HMD).
Based on true events, Wild casts Witherspoon as Cheryl Strayed who, with her life in disarray, undertakes the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail hike. The movie itself focuses on Strayed coming to terms with past experiences during her trek, with a particular focus on her relationship with her mother. In this short experience, viewers join Witherspoon in an isolated environment in which she can be seen picturing her mother.
The experience is available for free and released to promote the launch of the film on home formats. VR is proving to be a popular tool for marketing films, with Gear VR in particular recently hosting experiences for movies such as Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all releases for Gear VR, reporting back on the latest on them.
