Unreal Engine 4 creator Epic Games has been a keen supporter of virtual reality (VR) technology over the past few years, making its popular middleware entirely compatible with it. A number of videogames and experiences running on Unreal Engine 4 utilise VR support. Epic Games itself will be showcasing a handful of these next month at SIGGRAPH 2015 in Los Angeles, California as well as hosting a number of sessions dedicated to VR.
SIGGRAPH 2015 takes place from 9th – 13th August 2015 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Showdown, Epic Games’ in-house VR demo that debuted along the Oculus Rift’s Crescent Bay prototype last year, will be available throughout the entire event at a VR Village. Meanwhile, on 9th August, Epic Games will cover VR among other topics during an Epic Games Unreal Educational Event. This day-long event kicks off at 09:00 PT and will see the company share techniques and strategies for how to get the most out of Unreal Engine 4.
At 15:45 on the same say a Designing Epic Experiences presentation will be hosted, with its second part welcoming Epic Games Lead VR Engineer Nick Whiting, Weta Digital Head of R&D and VR Supervisor Alasdair Coull, and Weta Digital Software Developer Daniel Smith to talk about ‘Adapting Game and Film Content to VR Experiences’. Weta of course worked on the Thief in the Shadows VR experience based on The Hobbit that made its debut at GDC earlier this year. The piece will feature during the session itself.
There’s plenty for VR fans to check out at SIGGRAPH this year, then. VRFocus will follow the event closely, reporting on any VR updates to spin out of it.
