Virtual tourism is an exciting aspect of virtual reality (VR) technology. Companies are only just starting to act upon this potential, and today sees UK youth travel group, STA Travel, announce a partnership with USA marketing destination team, Brand USA. The pair will be offering a new ‘experiential campaign’ that uses the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) to offer the public a taste of a number of potential travel locations in the US.
The ‘Find Your State of Play’ #STARoadTrip campaign will get underway on 24th June 2015, touring the UK with a double decker bus and a mobile pop-up store. Customers will be able to strap on an Oculus Rift and visit cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. Those sold on certain destinations will also be able to take advantage of a ‘book now, pay later’ £29 GBP flight deposit deal. Other offers such as deals on campervans and more will be available on the bus and store. Scratchcards with a range of prizes will also be given out.

It’s not the first time VR has been used to book holidays. UK agency Thomas Cook as also used HMDs to give travellers a taste of an experience before they commit to it. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all uses for VR, reporting back with the latest.
