Those that have been following VRFocus since its launch last year may have heard of Tabletop Simulator, the upcoming boardgame title from the team at Berserk Games. The videogame has been in the Steam Early Access stage since April 2014, with the developer promising support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) to arrive in the future. The wait for VR support continues, but the release date for the full version of the title has now been announced.
Tabletop Simulator will arrive on 5th June 2015 for $19.99 USD. VR support won’t be included in the launch, but the developer notes that it will be arriving later on. “While this is the release of the game, this isn’t the end of development,” Berserk Games noted in a Steam update. “There is still a lot more to come like VR support, Space Theme Pack, Mobile version, and additional features & fixes. We want to make this the best virtual tabletop experience for everyone!”
Rather than strictly adhering to the rules of the classic boardgames it features, Tabletop Simulator instead simply gives players the tools necessary to play them and the physics to do what they want. While it’s entirely possible to play a normal game of Chess, for example, players could also move the pieces however they see fit, inventing their own rules or swiping the entire board away and causing mayhem for all. 15 games feature including Poker, Chinese Checkers, Dominoes, and Piecepack and there’s also support for multiplayer.
“Thank you so much for sticking with us through this amazing journey!” Berserk Games concluded in its update. “It’s great to see the community’s involvement with development and Steam Workshop. All of your input and feedback has shaped TTS into the game it is today and will continue to evolve it in the future.”
VRFocus will continue to follow Tabletop Simulator closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
