A number of horror movies have seen virtual reality (VR) promotional experiences over the past few years. The most recent was the next chapter in the Insidious franchise, which was a part of a marketing tour for the movie. Next up to get the VR treatment is Paranormal Activity, though this isn’t a simply marketing piece. Instead, a full VR videogame based on the Paramount Pictures franchise is due for release next year in Paranormal Activity VR, developed by VRWERX, a division of Beast Media Group that’s dedicated to VR experiences.
Paranormal Activity is on the way to the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift head-mounted displays (HMDs) on PC and Project Morpheus on PlayStation 4. It’s also coming to mobile platforms and the Xbox One, though possible VR solutions for these platforms are yet to be announced. Gameplay details on the project are yet to be fully revealed. The next edition of the film franchise is Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, which releases in October 2015.
“‘Paranormal Activity‘ is the perfect property for VRWERX. This franchise represents a huge audience that loves visceral, unbridled terror, which we intend to intensify through the incredible immersion only virtual reality enables,” said Russell Naftal, Beast MG Co-Managing Partner. “Our goal is for the Paranormal Activity VR video game to not only be the scariest game you’ve ever played, but the scariest experience you’ve ever had!”
VRFocus will continue to follow Paranormal Activity VR, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
