While many general visitors at the current Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) will be trying virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD) for the first time. Getting to grips with being in a VR world can take a little adjustment when the majority are used to a flat 2D screen. The same can be said for videogame creators themselves, who currently aren’t working in VR or don’t have a videogame suitable to transfer to VR.
On Twitter yesterday Ed Boon, Creative Director at NeatherRealm Studios and co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise had a demonstration of the Oculus Rift HMD on the Oculus VR stand and tweeted after “MIND BLOWN by the @oculus demo I was given today. Could’ve spend the whole day in their Toy Box just “trying stuff”.
Whether that was Ed’s first taste of VR is unknown, possibly the first time he’s got to use the Oculus Rift HMD, but was it enough to tempt him and the team at NeatherRealm Studios into VR?
As NeatherRealm generally specialises in fighting videogames, its current line-up includes Injustice: Gods Amongst Us and Mortal Kombat X. But fighting videogames may not transfer well to VR due to the mechanics of this particular genre. VRFocus has previously pondered the possibilities of Mortal Kombat in VR during one of our weekly ‘Make It A (Virtual) Reality’ articles.
VRFocus will keep reporting back on any further news from NeatherRealm.
