Back in April 2015 cinematic virtual reality (VR) company Jaunt announced Jaunt Studios. This new creative arm of the company is dedicated to make live-action VR experiences both with content partners and using original ideas. The team placed a number of Lucasfilm figureheads in charge, and it’s clearly paid off. Today sees Jaunt Studios announced a new deal with VFX artist Brandon Laatsch and his content studio, Stress Level Zero. The partnership will see the pair work on a wide range of new VR content.
As a result of the deal, a total of five live-action experiences will be released in 2015, some including CGI enhancements. Accompanying these films will be five corresponding behind-the-scenes pieces of VR content. The first content, titled Earth Encounter, is available today through Jaunt’s app on Android and can be viewed using Google Cardboard. An iOS version of the content is also due to arrive in the coming weeks. The piece follows a Martian DJ in a storytelling style that is said to be ‘easily digestible’ on mobile platforms.
“Virtual reality represents an entirely new medium for entertainment and media; it’s an avenue where taking risks and thinking out of the box is rewarded for pushing the medium forward,” said Cliff Plumer, President of Jaunt Studios. “Jaunt is making VR accessible to the next generation of storytellers, and for brands like Stress Level Zero, which have risen to fame on the front page of YouTube, VR is a natural avenue for creative exploration. We’re excited to be working with Brandon as he explores all the ways we can tell stories through virtual reality.”
VRFocus will continue to follow the latest updates from Jaunt, reporting back on any further progress.
