Earlier today it was confirmed that Square Enix, the publisher behind the likes of the Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider series, is working in virtual reality (VR). The company appeared in a long list of developers and publishers that are currently working with the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). But it appears that this isn’t the only VR HMD that the company is developing for right now. It’s also been revealed that the publisher is currently porting popular mobile title, Hitman: GO to the Gear VR mobile HMD.
The news was confirmed via the official Oculus VR app, which lists a number of titles that the company will be showcasing at this year’s E3 from 16th – 18th June. Hitman: GO originally launched on both iOS and Android. It is a turn-based strategy experience in which players are tasked with puzzle-esque missions. Controlling the iconic Agent 47, players will navigate a gird-based area, avoiding detection, taking out targets and infiltration locations. Weapons such as the protagonist’s iconic Silverballers and other tools such as disguises also feature.
It’s not yet clear what changes Square Enix is making to Hitman: GO to make it fit with Gear VR. That said, the third-person gameplay does seem like a natural fit for the mobile VR experience. When this new version of the acclaimed videogame will launch is not yet know, nor is any possible pricing. Of course, its announcement doesn’t reveal exactly what Square Enix is working on with the Oculus Rift, news of which will hopefully also be arriving at E3.
VRFocus will continue to follow the VR version of Hitman: GO, reporting back with the latest updates on its progress.
