Virtual reality (VR) is going to be applied to a wide range of film genres as it grows in popularity. There are already plenty of examples of VR documentaries and horror stories, but what about comedy? It might not be the first genre to spring to mind, but there’s certainly some interesting potential that. CBS Interactive is exploring that potential with the first VR comedy experience named Our Reality is Virtual, which is set to be on display as the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity today.
Our Reality Is Virtual stars Kenan Thompson, best known for his work on Saturday Night Live and Kenan & Kel. As reported by AdWeek, Thompson sits with a 360 degree camera, talking to the viewer about the benefits of VR. He snaps his fingers to make other characters appear and disappear and even plays multiple roles, as he can also be seen as the director and filming crew should the user look behind them. The clip is said to last 6 minutes and 40 seconds in total and it being privately screened at the festival today.
VR films are set to be an important aspect of the technology once head-mounted displays launch to consumers. Oculus Rift PC-based HMD creator Oculus VR even has its own film-dedicated division in Oculus Story Studio, which is working on a number of projects for the device.
VRFocus will continue to follow the latest VR film projects, reporting back with the latest on them.
